The Responsibilities of an Executor

Blustein, Shapiro, Frank & Barone, LLP Partner Megan Conroy recently joined Bob O. on “Oldies 98.9 FM” to discuss the responsibilities of an executor in the estate planning process. An executor is a fiduciary, someone legally bound to act in the best interests of the estate. Their job: collect assets, determine debts, and then pay beneficiaries and debtors accordingly. It’s a significant amount of work, and that’s why the probate process can take a year or longer.

It can be difficult to choose the right person for the job, but the good news is, you can designate as many people as you want and name them in an order of succession! You can even have co-executors, if you simply can’t choose between your top two. But remember, this is a time-consuming process requiring organization and attention to detail. Someone who is very busy or stressed may not be the best fit. Choosing the right executor is crucial to ensure your final wishes are carried out smoothly and efficiently.
